What is online Puja?

Online Puja lets you have a Puja performed in your name at a temple, wherever you are. Here is how it works, what a Sankalp is, and what you receive.

Devotion without distance

Not everyone can be physically present at a temple for a Puja — because of distance, health, work or simply living far from a particular shrine. Online Puja bridges that gap. A Puja is performed on your behalf at a temple by its priests, while you take part remotely, often watching by live stream.

The practice grew significantly in recent years as temples looked for ways to serve devotees who could not travel. Done properly, it is not a lesser form of worship but a way of staying connected to a temple and its traditions from afar.

The Sankalp at the heart of it

Central to any Puja is the Sankalp — a formal declaration of intent made before the ritual begins. For an online Puja, you provide your name, your Gotra (lineage) and your Manokamna (your heartfelt wish or purpose). The priest takes the Sankalp on your behalf, dedicating the Puja to you and your intention. This is what makes the Puja specifically yours, even at a distance.

What you receive

A well-run online Puja keeps you involved throughout. Many temples offer a live stream so you can watch the ritual as it happens, and a recorded video or updates afterwards — sometimes shared over WhatsApp for convenience. Prasad from the Puja is often packaged and delivered to your home, and you may receive a digital receipt or, where applicable, a certificate of the offering.

Online Puja can be individual — performed solely for you or your family — or part of a group ceremony, where many devotees’ Sankalps are taken together for a shared occasion such as a festival.

Choosing with care

Because online Puja involves trust — that the ritual is genuinely performed, and performed properly — it matters that it is offered through verified temple partnerships. A clear Sankalp process, transparent pricing, live or recorded evidence of the Puja, and proper prasad delivery are all signs of a service done with care.
