What is Kundli matching?
Kundli matching compares two birth charts before marriage. Here is how Guna Milan works, what Manglik analysis means, and how to read the result sensibly.
Comparing two charts
Kundli matching — also called Kundli Milan or Horoscope matching — is the traditional practice of comparing a prospective couple’s birth charts to assess compatibility for marriage. It looks at how the two charts interact, particularly the position of the Moon in each, to understand harmony in temperament, health, prosperity and family life.
The most widely used method is Ashtakoota matching, which produces a score out of 36 points, known as Guna Milan.
Guna Milan and the eight Kootas
Ashtakoota matching evaluates eight aspects, or Kootas, each carrying a different maximum number of points: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Together they add up to 36.
As a broad rule of thumb, a score of 18 or above is traditionally considered acceptable, and higher scores are seen as more favourable. But the number on its own is not the whole story — which Kootas match matters as much as the total, and Nadi and Bhakoot are often given particular weight.
Manglik analysis
Alongside Guna Milan, astrologers check for Mangal Dosha — whether Mars sits in certain houses of the chart. A person with this placement is described as Manglik. Traditionally, Mangal Dosha is considered significant for marriage, and matching often looks at whether both partners carry a similar placement, which is said to balance it.
It is important not to treat Manglik status as a verdict. Many astrologers consider additional factors that can soften or cancel its effect, and plenty of happy marriages exist between people with differing placements.
Reading the result sensibly
A matching report is best read as one input among many. A high score does not guarantee a happy marriage, and a lower score does not doom one. Families often use matching as a starting point for a conversation with an experienced astrologer, who can look beyond the numbers at the full picture of both charts.
Compatibility in real life is built on far more than charts — shared values, communication and mutual respect matter enormously. Kundli matching is a traditional lens, not a decision-maker.
